For her, toilets signify dignity

You’ve probably heard of Puri, the sea-side resort in Odisha. But have you heard of Sagada, a tiny village in Puri’s Nimapada block? Kabita Nayak (44), strong and gritty, hadn’t heard of Sagada either, until she came to the village as a young bride in 1985. India was taking slow steps towards liberalisation but Sagada stood out for reasons no one would ever want to advertise. Imagine a village, an […]

Srinagar: There is curfew in 10 districts of Kashmir since last night amid tension after the death of a 24-year-old man allegedly in Army firing during a protest in Baramulla in north Kashmir yesterday. The police have registered an FIR against the Army and have named a Colonel. The Army says the young man was some distance away from the site of the protest and was not killed in firing. There […]

India auditors allege corruption in farm loan waivers

Indian auditors have alleged corruption in a flagship government scheme to write off debts of poor farmers, Indian media reports say. In a report tabled in the parliament on Tuesday, the Comptroller and Auditor General (CAG) said it found lapses in 22% cases where loans were written off. Waivers were given to many ineligible people while those eligible were not considered, the CAG report said. The $1.8bn (£1.2bn) debt relief […]

Is Narendra Modi another Sanjay Gandhi?

‘To Sanjay Gandhi, the means were not as important as the end…’ ‘The appeal that someone like Narendra Modi holds is precisely this — that he gets things done. Don’t ask too many questions about how he gets it done though…’ ‘But that’s exactly what is dangerous because that is how authoritarianism comes in. It always comes in with public consent.’ Vinod Mehta, editor extraordinaire, speaks to Rediff.com‘s Saisuresh Sivaswamy in […]

Bhatkal bristles at terror tag

It has been termed “mini Dubai”, “mini Pakistan” and the birthplace of the Indian Mujahideen. Yet as Bhatkal returns to focus after the Hyderabad blasts, it shows no sign of the fault-lines that are said to be behind the rise of the IM. There is no communal tension in this coastal town in Uttara Kannada, Karnataka; it has no registered case of terror; the BJP has ample support; the police […]

Indian Mujahideen...Seems Bheri, Bheri Indian

Indian Mujahideen (also known by the pet name of I.M) is a pan-India organization that was founded in the literature of the Indian political aristocracy and its brotherly bureaucracy a few years ago. Soon after birth this child was adopted by the Indian media, and ever since has been seen on TV off and on. Various theories exist as to who founded this, when that was, where it runs from, […]

EVERY SEED OF POMEGRANATE WHICH GOES IN YOUR STOMACH IS A SEED OF LIFE FOR YOUR HEART!!!

Two things are full of benefits for the human being, lukewarm water and pomegranate. Pomegranate is a seasonal fruit in Pakistan & India so I tried an experiment with dried pomegranate seeds. I prepared a decoction boiling the fistful of dried seeds in half liter of water for 10 minutes, squeezed the seeds, strained the decoction and advised those patients suffering from painful angina to use a glass of lukewarm […]

300,000 dead turtles, 3 decades of carnage

In Pic :Dead on arrival 10-30,000 Olive Ridleys are fatally caught in fishing nets every year Dead turtles aren’t a new story. Every breeding season, from November to May, the media reports scores of dead Olive Ridleys scattered along the eastern coast, particularly at the mass nesting sites of Odisha. But what makes this carnage a vulgar certainty year after year is a damning story that needs to be told. In […]

One rat brain 'talks' to another using electronic link

cientists have connected the brains of lab rats, allowing one to communicate directly to another via cables. The wired brain implants allowed sensory and motor signals to be sent from one rat to another, creating the first ever brain-to-brain interface. The scientists then tested whether the rat receiving the signal could correctly interpret the information. As the ultimate test of their system, the team even linked the brains of rats […]
