Allied trailer: Brad Pitt & Marion Cotillard are a hot mess – no pun intended

It maybe just one-minute long, but the first trailer for Allied, the new drama starring Brad Pitt and Marion Cotillard, is a hot mess – no pun intended.
Everything about the trailer is pretty – the stars, the sets, the cinematography – but even after watching it a bunch of times, the plot of this movie remains a mystery.

First, let’s jot down what we understood. The movie is set during World War II (all the swastikas gave that away). Brad Pitt and Marion Cotillard appear to be spies or government officials of some sort, who obviously fall in love at some point in the movie (all the kissing gave that away). And it takes place in Casablanca (which is either the boldest or dumbest move they could’ve made).

On paper, Allied has a lot of ingredients in place. It’s enough to get excited about – Brad Pitt (returning to the WWII arena after Inglourious Basterds and Fury), Marion Cotillard, the director (Robert Zemeckis, for God’s sake!) and the writer (Steven Knight). Not like you get any of that from this clip, which is more than happy just selling a run-of-the-mill Oscar bait movie.

Chances are the movie will almost definitely be better than this trailer, but we’ll have to wait till November to see if the lukewarm marketing affects its performance.
