Prem Ratan Dhan Payo trailer: It’s a Salman Khan-glorifying fiesta trying to be a family drama

In a way, the trailer of Salman Khan’s next film Prem Ratan Dhan Payo is slightly deceptive.

For the first 40 to 45 seconds of the trailer, you’ll see some beautiful shots of colourful palaces which look a lot like the ones in Rajasthan while a female singer sings beautiful lines, giving the trailer a mysterious feel. Could it be? Could the word ‘mysterious’ actually be used to describe a Salman Khan movie?

But right when you get hopeful, a familiar voice with an even more familiar accent says, “Main waapas aa gaya…main waapas aa gaya (I’m back…I’m back).”

And BANG! Salman Khan appears on screen, the music suddenly changes to a loud, upbeat theme, everyone starts dancing and singing because Sallu Bhai is on stage and you realise that the movie, like any other Salman movie, is about worshipping and focussing entirely on Salman Khan.

In fact, the only time that a person who is not Salman speaks in the trailer is Sonam Kapoor. And she’s talking about Salman’s character. And you don’t even see Sonam Kapoor. It’s just her voice in the background while Salman is seen holding a sword with an intense expression.

There was a time when Salman Khan’s ‘Prem’ avatar was as popular as Shah Rukh Khan’s ‘Rahul’. There was a time when the audience was completely won over by Prem’s charm in films like Maine Pyar Kiya, Hum Aapke Hain Koun and Andaz Apna Apna. 20 odd years later, nothing seems to have changed. Now, whether that’s a good thing or bad — only time will tell.

In almost all the movies in which Salman has played ‘Prem’, the familial unit has been a big part of the plot. Salman is seen saying, “Har family mein problem hai…par woh khushnaseeb hain jinki family hoti hai (All families have problems. But those who have families in the first place are the lucky ones.)”

It’s safe to bet that Salman will be seen giving a lot of gyaan on family values in this family drama this Diwali.

Prem Ratan Dhan Payo will release on 12 November, 2015. Watch the entire trailer :
