The Dark Tower trailer: Idris Elba, Mathew McConaughey’s characters engage in a duel

While the first The Dark Tower trailer gave us a good look at how the film will turn out, with some impressive gun loading sequences from Idris Elba, who plays the main protagonist of the film; the international trailer serves more as a character sketch of Elba and McConaughey’s characters.

he trailer introduces us to the Gunslingers, referred to as knights, whose duty is to protect the Dark Tower, which ensures that the Universe does not collapse.

Idris Elba plays a Gunslinger who encounters a young boy from Earth, played by Tom Taylor. Taylor’s character finds himself in the midst of a war in Elba’s world by walking through a gateway.

And from the looks of the trailer it is obvious that the film has been inspired by old western films — its very evident from The Gunsligner’s action sequences and The Man in Black’s Southern drawl.

Based on Stephen King’s series of novels, The Dark Tower is directed by Nikolaj Arcel, and stars Idris Elba as Roland Deschain/ The Gunslinger; Matthew McConaughey as The Man in Black, and Tom Taylor as Jake Chambers.

The Dark Tower is not a direct adaptation of any of King’s books; rather it pulls influence from across the whole series of Dark Tower novels, while also adding its own take on the events we see unfold in the books. In effect, it is another retelling of The Gunslinger’s story, similar to what happens when he reaches the Dark Tower itself, only to find his story starts again.

Here’s the international trailer of the film, which releases in India on 4 August 2017:
