Tumhari Sulu trailer: Vidya Balan’s upcoming film is a look-good, feel-good entertainer

When was the last time you watched a trailer and kept beaming for the next hour-and-a-half? If you haven’t, then rest assured; the trailer of Vidya Balan’s upcoming film Tumhari Sulu is an absolute delight.

The visuals, the texture, the performers, the soundtrack, and the situations make for a wholesome entertainer which reminds you of an old Hrishikesh Mukherjee or Basu Chatterjee film that revolved around real, ordinary middle-class people and hence had a universal appeal.

Suresh Triveni’s directorial Tumhari Sulu looks good as well as feels good. In the two-minute and 30-second-long trailer, there isn’t a single moment when one can stop smiling. It channels a pure joie de vivre! Balan as Sulochana is the quintessential Indian homemaker, that we see in advertisements. Triveni, coming from an ad background definitely aces in recreating the same look and feel as that of million commercials we have seen on TV since ages. Remember Dhara? or Ujala? This time it’s Sulu.

Sulochana is (apparently) looking for a departure from the stultifying mundanity of her life. That is seen in her earnest vigour and attitude to do new things. After winning a pressure cooker in a radio contest, she asks the RJ for a TV instead. She always has a positive vibe around her, making people around her happy and amazed at the same time. This never-to-say-die attitude and a positive self-image lands her a job as a night radio jockey, or as Neha Dhupia’s character puts it, “Saree wali bhabhi. Late-night show.”

But she isn’t a pushover. She does speak in a sensuous voice, but never lets the conversation take a wrong turn. When a listener asks for her number, she readily agrees, only to give the police emergency number — 100. She starts a happy, successful and celebrated life, which she always yearned for. The trailer also has the 1987 film, Mr India’s iconic song ‘Hawa Hawai’ playing in the background which only accentuates the whole mood of the trailer. But, life’s a cycle; hence she too has to face the cons of this newly-attained fame and glory.

Tumhari Sulu stars Vidya Balan, Manav Kaul, Neha Dhupia and RJ Mallishka. It is co-produced by Bhushan and Krishan Kumar’s T-Series Films and celebrity photographer Atul Kasbekar’s Ellipsis Entertainment. The film is slated to release on 17 November.
