Venezuelan Beauty Queen Dies From Injuries Following Protests

A student demonstrator and beauty queen died Wednesday from a bullet wound to the head, the latest and most high-profile casualty in Venezuela’s political unrest.

Genesis Carmona, 22, was shot in the head during a protest on Tuesday in the city of Valencia. The Venezuelan newspaper El Universal showed the dramatic image of Carmona being carried away from the protests in a motorcycle.

She is the fifth fatality blamed on the recent political turmoil in the South American country.

“How long are we going to live like this? How long do we have to tolerate this pressure, with them killing us?” said a relative who asked not to be named. “She only needed one more semester to graduate,” the relative told Reuters.

In Caracas, three people have been shot dead and another person run over by a car during a demonstration in the coastal town of Carupano. On Wednesday, there was sporadic trouble as rival groups scuffled outside the court where opposition leader Leopoldo Lopez was due.

Lopez surrendered to authorities on Tuesday afternoon.

Opposition supporter Genesis Carmona is evacuated on a motorcycle after being shot in the head during a protest against Nicolas Maduro’s government in Valencia. The 22-year-old student died on Wednesday.
