Captain America fans can take a deep breath. Now that the first trailer of Captain America: Civil War is here, we can tell you this is not yet another Avengers. Yes, it has Iron Man, yes it has Black Widow, yes it has Hawkeye, yes it has a host of other would-be superheroes but the film is all Cap.
After the excellent Captain America: Winter Soldier in 2014, this was the least we could expect. Brothers Anthony and Joe Russo, who directed the last film, are back with this superhero vs superhero caper and we like what we see.
The last film ended with Steve Rogers (Chris Evans), called Captain America when he is suited, saving his friend Bucky aka Winter Soldier (Sebastian Stan) who was brainwashed into going rogue. The trailer opens with Rogers and Falcon (Anthony Mackie) interrogating Bucky.
The government is after Bucky and Cap will save him at all costs, even if that means other Avengers will become his frenemies and the government (now wearing the face of William Hunt) will brand him a vigilante.
As revealed earlier, Iron Man (Robert Downey Jr) and Cap will go head-to-head but that’s not because our dear Tony Stark takes his penchant for staying on the wrong side of right too far. For once, it seems, he is on the side of the law.
While Cap, Bucky and Iron Man fight it out, this exchange does tug on our heartstrings: “I’m sorry, Tony, you know I wouldn’t do this if I had any other choice,” Rogers tells Stark in the trailer “But he’s my friend.” “So was I,” Stark replies.
Not much else gets revealed here except who else is involved: Natasha Romanoff (Scarlett Johansson), War Machine (Don Cheadle), Scarlett Witch (Elizabeth Olsen), Hawkeye (Jeremy Renner), Ant-Man (Paul Rudd) and the first appearance of Chadwick Boseman as Black Panther.
Winter Soldier got Marvel $714 million, with the generous dose of superheroes from Marvel Cinematic Universe, the production house will be hoping to beat Avengers’ $1.5 billion record. We are all prepared for the big, fat superhero showdown which releases on May 6 next year.
