The CID wing of the Karnataka Police, which last week revealed that there were similarities in the killing of rationalists Dr MM Kalburgi, Narendra Dabholkar and Govind Pansare, has made yet another startling discovery — the same weapon was used to kill all the three.

The revelation comes in the wake of Karnataka Home Minister G Parameshwara’s admission that a single group could be responsible for the killing of the three because of several similarities.

The findings also debunk the Centre’s contention that the three killings were not linked to the same group.
In its latest confidential report to the government, the CID officials have pointed out that a 7.65-mm country-made gun was used in the killing.
“Ballistic experts confirmed that the bullet was fired from a 7.65-mm country made gun. We double-checked and the tests are showing the same results. Narendra Dabholkar and Govind Pansare were also killed with a 7.65 mm-country made gun. This cannot be a sheer coincidence. We have sufficient evidence now to indicate that the same group is behind the killings of all these people,” sources in the Karnataka CID pointed out.

In a different report, the CID brought to the attention of the government the pattern involved in the killing of the three rationalists.

All of them were gunned down in the morning hours; bike-borne youths committed the crime and they carried out the killings where CCTV cameras were not installed.
The perpetrators have remained off the grid for a long time allegedly with the support of some front-end organisation, according to the CID officials.

“There is some connection between the three killings. We are hopeful of cracking the case,” said Parameshwara even as a section of the government is in favour of handing over the probe into Kalburgi’s killing to the CBI.
According to sources in the government, the CBI will be in a better position to trace the origin of the bullets used in the killings.
The latest finding that the same gun was used to kill the three rationalists lends credence to Karnataka CID Police’s contention that the same group committed the crimes.
Unidentified gunmen shot dead Kalburgi at his residence on August 30 in Dharwad in northwest Karnataka.
They fled from the scene of crime on a two-wheeler.
So far, the police have not been able to identify the culprits though sketches of the suspects were prepared.
The government even announced a cash reward for information relating to the suspects, but it has not been successful so far in cracking the case.
