The trailer for Jyothika’s new film Magalir Mattum is interesting and something different.
Jyothika, who is referred to as Jo endearingly, has been a one time top actress in Kollywood. She married actor Suriya and took a break for 9 years before making a successful comeback in a matured role with 36 Vayadhinile (2015).
After going through many scripts, she chose Magalir Mattum, which is written and directed by Bramma, who had made the critically acclaimed and national award winning Kuttram Kadithal.
The trailer and the audio of Magalir Mattum were launched today (on 24 April) at a function in Chennai.
The trailer has Jo playing a spirited and bold woman, a documentary filmmaker who ignites the dormant fire in three other women – Urvasi, Bhanupriya and Saranya — to rebel against their shackled existence.
The all-women gang decides to break free from their mundane life and experience freedom. The trailer gives you the feeling that it is going to be a fun comedy film with a subtle message on women empowerment.
It looks like the film is tailor made to suit Jo’s mass image. She dances, rides a motorbike and makes funny faces, which is all a part of her bubbly heroine image from her early films.
The director of the film Bramma had said at the launch that Magalir Mattum is based on a true story and is a celebration of womanhood.
Jyothika made a rare public appearance along with her entire family, including sister Nagma, at the trailer launch, and in a hard hitting speech said, “Have you noticed in our films, heroes grow younger with every film and heroines lose out fast as they get older? Director Bramma has given me an opportunity to play a much younger role than my actual age (Jo is 40). After marriage I got only offers for mother’s roles, now Bramma has given me back my youth as I play a 30 year old in the film.”
Jyothika further asked directors of big hero films not to write dumb characters and double-meaning dialogues for heroines.
She added: “Today cinema has a big impact on youngsters; a hero should romance one heroine at a time. Let’s not increase the number of heroines”.
Jyothika also thanked the men in the Sivakumar family for being a great support. Suriya was also present at the launch, and said that he will try his best to make socially responsible films, after hearing Jo’s request.
Magalir Mattum is produced by Suriya’s 2D Entertainment and is slated for release in May.
