Indian sentenced in the US over Al-qaeda funding
Yahya Farooq Mohammad, an Indian National, was sentenced for 27.5 years in prison by the US Supreme Court. He was sentenced after being found guilty for providing al-qaeda leaders with thousands of dollars. Moreover, he was also found to be soliciting the murder of the judge who was hearing the case.
Mohammad is 39 in age, and an engineer from the Ohio State University, batch of 2004. He married a US citizen in the year 2008. Mohammad has conspired to provide thousands of dollars in support of Violent Jihad, to Anwar Al-Awlaki. He admitted to have done this, and also admitted to travelling to Yemen to provide thousands of dollars with his co-defendants.
Mohammad will be soon deported from the US grounds, once he completes his sentence, as per his plea agreement.
Al-Awlaki was killed in a US drone strike that took place in Yemen in 2011. He was a designated global terrorist in the year 2010 and was a key leader of al-qaeda.
On the 22nd July, 2009, Mohammad travelled to Yemen with his two associates to meet Al-Awlaki and deliver over $20,000. They were not able to meet him in person, but Mohammad ensured that the money was delivered to him safely.
An FBI official, undercover, posed himself as a hitman, with whom Mohammad is said to have conspired killing the district judge Jack Zouhary. Him and his associates were ready to pay $15,000 to get him kidnapped and murdered. A $1,000 down payment was also paid to the undercover official through the help of Mohammad’s family member. On being asked when was he supposed to kill the judge, Mohammad said ‘the sooner, the better you know’.
