In an incident that looks straight out of a crime thriller, a public sector bank’s lockers were looted by robbers after they entered the bank by tunneling a hole through the shop next door.Â
The culprits dug an underground tunnel of 25 feet to the locker room of Bank of Baroda and broke open 30 lockers out of 225 lockers and escaped with the loot. The valuation of the looted property is yet to be ascertained,” he said, adding, “Some leads are there and and our teams are working on these. The offence is registered at Sanpada police station vide CR No 136/2017 u/s 454,457,380 IPC.”
However, the robbers could not break open the main safe housing the bank’s cash reserves.
The robbery, reminiscent of the British-Hollywood flick “The Bank Job”, created a sensation and hundreds of locals gathered there to see the unfolding drama.
A police official said it could be the work of expert criminals and a new modus operandi had been revealed which may need to be factored in by security agencies manning such banks.
