Why are Gujarat Legislative Assembly elections important for NaMo?
Gujarat elections are turning into a game changer, now that Rahul Gandhi is the new Congress President. Being one of the wealthiest states in India, winning Gujarat is particularly important for Modi led BJP Government.
The Gujarat Assembly elections have garnered the attention of millions as they have witnessed a brutal verbal fight in the state like never before. The direct contest between Narendra Modi and the new President in town, Rahul Gandhi seems to take this fight a notch up.
Modi has ruled Gujarat under the aegis of the Bhartiya Janata Party since 2001t. The state has been a launchpad for his political career.
However, in 2002 Gujarat witnessed a widespread communal violence among the residents. For this, the critics blame Modi for his “actions” that led to this violent behaviour among the masses. The violent commotion in the state, at that time led to about 1,200 people being killed, most of whom were Muslims.
This did not turn the situation around because Modi still managed to win all State Assembly elections in 2002, 2007 and even 2012. He soon stepped up on the ladder and became a party mascot in 2014. He is a very important personality in his own way, and probably that’s why the Gujarat State Assembly elections are so important for him and his party. Losing Gujarat this time means shattering his powerful image.
Moreover, losing Gujarat to Rahul Gandhi who is almost two decades younger to him would humiliate his position and standing. This will, furthermore put a question mark on his chances of winning the National General Elections in 2019.
Congress this time around has a major chance to turn around fate for themselves. Their fortunes could be favored as the media points out. This would counter all the bitter remarks and the personal attacks that the Modi led BJP has made on the Congress Party and the officials. Media also points out that by all standards, certain comments and remarks are a desperate attempt on the part of Modi and BJP to shore up their chances in Gujarat.
Modi still has his share of critics. Farmers are distressed, the businessmen of the country are angry over the current tax regime in the country, the core supporters of the BJP, the youth of the country are stressed about the rising levels of unemployment. All this is prevalent more than ever, not just in the whole country, but majorly in Gujarat.
