I am sure most of you have read Prime Minister Modi’s tweet. April 28 will go down as a milestone moment in India’s history. Manipur’s Leisang village became the last to be electrified. According to the Government norms, a village is considered electrified if at least 10% of its households, as well as public places such as schools, panchayat offices and health centres, have access to electricity.
The electrification is part of the Deendayal Upadhyaya Gram Jyoti Yojana in 2015. It strived to electrify a total of 18,452 villages. But the question is will just 10% electrification of the villages address the empowerment issue for Indian household? More importantly how manageable is the gap between 10% electrification of villages and a complete electrification of households across the country?
As of now only 1300 villages have complete electricity in India. The math is there for you to compete. The gap between 18452 and1300 is not a simple feat. Perhaps what can be deduced is that the Modi Government has taken electricity to additional 78% of the villages. What it particularly important is that the basic resources have been established. The transformer have been set up in every village. Now the challenge is about taking electricity to every household in India.
The Government has now set a fresh deadline for the same. March 2019 is the ne milestone to watch out for. The Modi Government promises electricity to every household in India. The groundwork to take power to every Indian household is surely going to be time consuming. Another key consideration is the duration of electricity. Needless to mention, we have to move towards a 24×7 electricity for every household in India.
That is where the final benchmark has to be created. The average user’s priorities, value of power, affordability and duration of power supply will all come into focus. The question is will the Government manage all of these across almost 4 crore households under a year? Well, some well-rounded ground rules will have to be taken into consideration. Like the experts say, it is a wait and watch game hereon. The task though is surely uphill.
