Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau is coming to India for a week-long visit. This will be the first visit of a Canadian PM to India since 2012, and that’s not just why it’s creating a buzz.
Apart from the fact that the trip is an opportunity to promote cooperation between India and Canada, Trudeau’s popularity among young Indians is also a factor. Trudeau will be meeting with Indian PM Narendra Modi, and many other personalities, during his seven-day trip.
During the course of the trip, Trudeau will travel across five Indian cities–Agra, Ahmedabad, Mumbai, Amritsar and New Delhi. According to Trudeau’s itinerary, he is scheduled to pay a visit to a number of iconic Indian places. Take a look:
Taj Mahal, Agra
Trudeau is scheduled to visit the Taj Mahal in Agra on February 18. This trip to one of the Wonders of the World will mark the official beginning of his India trip. It is important to note the fact that most global personalities who visit India, from political leaders to movie stars, usually visit the Taj Mahal.
Sabarmati Ashram, Ahmedabad
Trudeau will visit this iconic residence of Mahatma Gandhi on February 19. The Sabarmati or Gandhi Ashram, founded in 1915, houses many relics related to Gandhi and the Indian struggle for independence. Japanese PM Shinzo Abe also paid a visit to the ashram during his trip in September 2017.
Golden Temple, Amritsar
While Trudeau will spend February 20 in Mumbai, he’ll travel to Amritsar to pay a visit to the Golden Temple on February 21. Sri Harmandir Sahib, popularly known as the Golden Temple, is the holiest gurudwara and the most prominent site for Sikhs across the world. Trudeau’s visit here will be significant, because of the huge Sikh constituency in Canada.
Jama Masjid, Delhi
On February 22, Trudeau will be in Delhi to visit the Jama Masjid. The Jama Masjid is one of the largest mosques of India. Apart from being a significant site of worship for Indian Muslims, it is also one of the most well-recognised heritage sites of the country.
Rashtrapati Bhawan, Delhi
Trudeau will visit the Rashtrapati Bhawan for an official welcome from the President of India. While the purpose here is to pay President Ram Nath Kovind a visit, Trudeau can probably admire the historical significance of the Rashtrapati Bhawan. This iconic complex was constructed between 1912 and 1929 to house the British Viceroy of India. After India gained independence from British rule, it became the residence of the President of India.
