Information, comments or views about us through others’ eyes is ‘environmental feedback’. Our quality of life depends on how we take the feedback about ourselves from others. If we know how to handle this properly, then it will help to keep us on track on our life plan. It also helps us become wiser and saves us from various psychosomatic illnesses.
On the surface, environmental feedback can be either pleasant or unpleasant in nature. If it is pleasant, we tend to make it a base for our happiness. If unpleasant, we either avoid it or tend to act out of guilt to please others. We take feedback on ourselves superficially, and as a result, feedback makes us happy or sad. But this is not the primary purpose of sincere feedback. Feedback is given so that we learn something new about ourselves and address shortcomings and weaknesses to make the best out of our assets and progress in life. This can happen only when we look beyond the surface. We can do this by zeroing in on the correct message and interpreting it wisely so that we benefit from feedback, rather than getting upset with it.
We get different feedback on a daily basis, but what makes it important is the repetition. When feedback about a certain trait reaches us frequently, it means we need to look into its meaning and work on it seriously. The general tendency to handle repetition is to be irritated about it. Irritation causes a rush of adrenaline and the real feedback is lost. It would be much more helpful if we keep an ‘open-door attitude’ about it. When our doors are open to receiving feedback, it means we are on experimental mode.
Here are a few more tips to interpret environmental feedback in our daily life:
- Working On Resistance: The first and most important step is not to be in denial mode. You put yourself on denial mode by being sad or happy because of feedback. With regular practice, you can develop an open attitude towards your environment and let go of resistance.
- Being Self-centric: As far as environmental feedback is concerned, being self-centric helps more than being people-centric. The feedback is exclusively for you so you need to work with yourself rather than giving importance to others. You can save energy by being self-centric.
- Non-judgemental Approach: Environmental feedback is neither good nor bad in nature. It is just a way life interacts with you.Your life always tries to convey messages for your welfare. If you are facing lots of criticism from everywhere and getting affected by this, then you are really sensitive, and not trying to use your own potential and skills to improve yourself. Life is trying to tell you to invest your energies to create a platform for yourself so that you can use your skills. When you make use of your skills and potential, then criticism disappears.
- Being Curious: When you approach your life with curiosity, then environmental messages become clearer to you. Being curious helps in being flexible. Flexibility helps you to replace old beliefs with new, useful ones. The belief, which helped you a few years back, might be no more useful to you now, because you have changed and have become different. Replacing an old belief with a new one is an easy and interesting job for the people who are curious about their lives. Being curious helps us to come out of our comfort zone.
Working with our environmental feedback is an interesting process that gives us strength and takes us to a different level. It takes us in a more positive and creative direction.
