A video featuring actor Deepika Padukone has gone viral, accruing two million views in the two days since it was posted online by fashion magazine Vogue.
The video, titled My Choice and directed by Homi Adajania of Cocktail and Finding Fanny fame, uses Ms Padukone, 29, as a brand ambassador for women’s empowerment.
The black-and-white video, which lasts a little over two minutes, features the actress calling for a change in the “caged” mindset of men about women. The video asks men to stop judging women for their choices of clothes, profession, life, or anything else.
“To be size zero, or size 15. It’s my choice. They don’t have a size for my spirit. They never will,” Ms Padukone says in the black-and-white video.
“To marry or not to marry. To have sex before marriage, to have sex outside of marriage or not to have sex,” she says.
The video features 99 Mumbai women from different fields of life asserting their right to make political, sexual and economic choices.
“My choice, to love a man, or a woman, or both. Remember, you are my choice. I am not your privilege,” says Ms Padukone.
While many Bollywood celebrities have shared this video on Twitter, hailing the actress for the strong message, some didn’t think the video dealt the women empowerment issue in the right way.(Edit)
