Justice Ranjan Gogoi to take oath as Chief Justice of India on October 3

 

Justice Ranjan Gogoi is all set to be the next Chief Justice of India. Gogoi will take oath on October 3.

Incumbent Chief Justice of India Deepak Misra, who is set to retire on October 2, has recommended his name to the government for the post.

According to convention, the senior-most judge is eligible to be the Chief Justice of India.

Gogoi is expected to retire on November 17 as the Supreme Court judge.

Justice Ranjan Gogoi, born in 1954, joined the bar association in 1978. In 2001, Gogoi was appointed a judge in Gauhati High Court.

He became the Chief Justice of Punjab and Haryana High Court on February 12, 2011.

In January, Gogoi was among the four senior judges who held a press conference in New Delhi citing that democracy in the country was under threat.
