Litmus Test for the BJP in Uttar Pradesh- 2017 Civic Polls
Uttar Pradesh saw testing Bharatiya Janata Party for 652 Urban Local Body seats in the State’s civic body polls. There are revelations of some good news for the BJP government as well.
The BJP Government won 325 seats out of 403 Constituent Assembly seats as it came to power in March this year.
The counting of polls for the civic body elections started on Friday, where sources reveal that there were some good news for the party. The BJP party is said to be ahead in the race by about 16 seats. The news was spread only after an hour of the poll counting. According to other media reports, BJP’s Mayor Candidates from Saharanpur, Lucknow, Ghaziabad, Meerut, and Gorakhpur have been leading in the poll counts.
The State Government under the leadership of Yogi Adityanath constituted two Municipal Corporations in Vrindavan-Mathura and Ayodhya in March, 2017 after coming to power.
The performance of the State Government is assumed to be going under scrutiny once the Civic Poll results are announced. Because of the aforementioned reasons, Yogi Adityanath himself campaigned for the Government. While the campaigns for all other rival parties were low-key this time. BSP, Congress, and even SP did not see the key players campaigning for the local body elections, in the name of the Party.
The counting of votes for the local body elections is still underway. The counting is going on for 16 Municipal Corporations, 198 Municipal Councils and 438 Nagar Panchayats. The turnout for the Civic Body elections was approximately 52% of the total 3.32 crore voter. The elections took place in three phases.
