The release of a Rajnikanth starrer is always unique. From fans taking official leave to watch the first day first show to release of silver coins with his face embossed on it, the phenomenon is simply mind boggling. And if the overtures of the fans were not sufficient, some box office basics tell you how big a Rajnikanth starrer can get and why he might not be just one of India’s most phenomenal superstars but also very few in the world he continue to exercise such strong powers over the box office movie after movie.
Kabali has done a massive record breaking pre-release business of Rs 225 cr. Not only is this number huge, it is well over what industry experts had predicted. The Tamil Nadu distribution rights alone have contributed a major share. They brought in Rs 68 crores for Kabali producer, Kalaippuli S Thanu. In Andhra Pradesh the theatrical rights brought in Rs 32 crores revenue and Karnataka & Kerala rights contributed close to Rs. 18 crore.
Made with a budget of Rs. 100 crore, the Kabali makers are rightfully expecting this movie to become a box office milestone. The expectation is that this movie will better Baahubali’s record and go on to gross more than 500 crore.
The movie’s Tamil and Telugu versions are hitting the screens simultaneously. Efforts are on to even bring forth the Hindi version on screen simultaneously. Interestingly, many Bollywood distributors have evinced interest for the same and that contribution seen as a major boost to the overall revenue collection.
What perhaps the Rajni fans would watch out for is would this movie break Sultan’s recent record of Rs 500 cr plus world wide revenue inflow. If trade experts are to be believed we are set to look into a Rs 700 cr territory from Kabali’s worldwide collection.
