The Top Five Ways to Prevent Colorectal Cancer

 

Colorectal cancer is the second leading cause of cancer deaths in the United States. More than 51,000 people die each year from this preventable form of cancer which may involve either the colon or the rectum. Men and women are both at risk for developing colorectal cancer. The good news is that there are preventative steps that reduce your chances of developing this disease. If you are over the age of 50, sedentary, obese, a tobacco smoker or have a family history of bowel disease or polyps–follow these steps to prevent colorectal cancer.

Don’t Smoke 

Smoking will increase your risk of developing colorectal cancer. If you have a family history of colorectal cancer, you can greatly reduce your risk factor by 50% when you quit smoking.

Moderate Alcohol Intake 

People at risk for colorectal cancer or bowel disorder should limit their daily alcoholic intake. Men should limit drinks to two per day and women should have only one alcoholic beverage.

Maintain a Healthy Weight 

Exercise daily and pay attention to your body mass index when working to prevent disease and cancer. Studies have shown that excess body weight reduction plays a positive role in disease prevention.

Eat Healthfully 

Consume whole grains, eat lean meats and nibble on vegetables at each meal to prevent the development of colorectal cancer. Look for high-fiber nuts, beans and snacks to cut your cancer risk.
 

Include Calcium in Your Diet 

Choose low-fat milk, cheese and dairy products to reduce your risk of colorectal cancer. Limit red meat and processed foods to stay healthy and prevent cancer
