Trumpery Times

Award winning American actress Tina Fey is of the opinion that “confidence is 10% work and 90 % delusion”, but one suspects that had she been exposed to the bizarre psychology of the orange haired buffoon a little earlier she would have been forced to revise the 10% to an even more insignificant figure. History has yet to see a likeness in a position of such authority who while suffering under the delusion that the world revolves around him also seems to believe that he is the USA’s trump card.

The deal maker of the century, Donald Trump operates under the grand assumption that all the conflict zones of the world are a negotiation away from a resolution and his broking skills are a global panacea. He treats the world like an extension of the board games that he no doubt grew up on but failed to outgrow.

Having trained thoroughly in the domestic moolah-making circuit, he decides to take advantage of the wide experience gathered at the ‘apprentice’ and school the less fortunate denizens of the wide world so that they can discover the American way to paradise; the lucky ones of course get to unfold the secrets of his book ‘The Art of the Deal’. With a fallacious understanding of history and a distorted sense of geography, Trump and his faithful band of supremacists are well and truly on their way to make America great again and in the process take a few thirdworlders along with them (but only if they are amenable to their ways). This fosters his boundless adventurism as his imagination fuelled by his colossal ignorance makes him intrepid enough to tilt at windmills.

He of course has the support of the prodigious American war machine behind him, but given his fickle nature with little or no trace of the prudent & the precise in him, the power that he wields often threatens to become a bigger concern than the problem itself. His bonhomie with the North Korean despot Kim Jong Un is probably a meeting of minds, minus the nature of the political dispensations both head. This is of course done under the careful pretext of responsibility as “we are the most powerful country in the world and I need to fix this…”.

This would probably entail the securing of an extremely dubious promise of going slow on the nuclear button in exchange for a lucrative offer of state-of-the-art American defense paraphernalia. As the duo bonded at the summit in Hanoi (ironically) over shrimp cocktail with Thousand Island dressing to start, and chocolate lava cake for dessert, a menu that is apparently typical of the stuff served in a Trump-branded resort, one wondered if this was the post-deal celebration as the traditional executive spread, before the parties settle down for intensive negotiations, goes missing.

As a more precarious situation develops in the Persian Peninsula with Iran which could lead to a possible conflagration in the near future, U.S. lawmakers from both the Republican and Democratic parties are pushing legislation to ban the use of funds for military action against Iran without congressional authorization. This has put out into the open the serious misgivings that his own partymen have about the Don and his preposterous schemes, as they attempt to uncover the protective gear of their boss who hitherto has been wholly wrapped up in himself and therefore feels invulnerable. While this might not yet indicate mutiny in the ranks the signals are clear.

During a recent press conference Trump talked about his capacity to destroy Afghanistan but mercifully clarified that he did not want to take that route. But now the megalomaniac is hoping to rustle up some new volatile territories as he exudes some of his loquacious luster to help them burn brighter. Our eyes pop out and our hearts skip a beat as it is seemingly our desi inferno that has caught his ‘unsettling’ attention. The disruptive deal-oriented mind of the Don is at its chimerical best as he rambles. “Prime Minister Modi tells me Kashmir or is it cashmere …is a beautiful thing … place. But it has bombs everywhere…damn those blasted jackets…mighty confusing…cashmere it is, got my goat, it has…hell drone it, blow up that darned jacket before it blows up the f&%$ing world”.

While it would convenient to dismiss the Trumper’s imaginary spiel as nonsensical, they say the deluded believe “ True imagination is not fanciful dreaming, it is fire from heaven.” And therein lies a tale.
