Two dead and 23 injured after car ploughs into pedestrians at South by Southwest festival

 

TWO people have died and at least 23 have been injured after a car ploughed into a crowd of pedestrians at a US festival.

The vehicle drove through temporary barricades at the South By Southwest (SXSW) film and music festival in Austin, Texas.

Police said 23 people have been taken to hospital, with at least five suffering serious injuries. 

The crash happened at around 12:30am and police say the driver has been taken into custody.

Austin Chief of Police, Art Acevedo, said: ‘We owe it to the victims and their families to gather the evidence we need to bring [those responsible] to justice.’

He added: ‘It could have been worse. I’ve been here seven years and this has never happened.’

Several witnesses at the scene described seeing the car travelling at speed before hitting several people standing outside a club.

One witness said: “I remember seeing people bouncing off of the street.”
