BJP threatens disruption of parliament

NEW DELHI:India’s principal opposition Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) reiterated its decision not to let the parliament function smoothly unless the federal home minister Sushil Kumar Shinde renders his unqualified apology over his Hindu terror remark.

BJP made it clear that the ruling coalition should not expect smooth functioning of the budget session which begins today with the customary address by the President to the joint sitting of both House of parliament at an all-party meeting convened by the Lok Sabha speaker Meira Kumar yesterday.

“I appeal to (the ruling Congress party chief) Sonia Gandhi to get the home minister to retract his statement and apologise, otherwise we will continue our protest both out on the streets and inside parliament,” BJP president Rajnath Singh said yesterday.

Singh was slated to lead a protest march to Shinde’s official bungalow. The local Delhi Police stopped the march by putting barricades and briefly detained Singh and others on the Parliament Street, before letting them off.

Earlier parliamentary affairs minister Kamal Nath and Shinde, who is also leader of the house in the Lok Sabha, met leader of opposition Sushma Swaraj in a futile attempt to persuade her and get BJP to promise support during the crucial budget session.

“Shinde said the BJP and RSS runs terror camps…in that case, I have no right to be the leader of opposition, we want the speaker to address this issue,” Swaraj said after the all-party meeting, seeking direct intervention of the Lok Sabha speaker Meira Kumar.

Shinde had last month invited wrath of the BJP after talking about Hindu terror. “We have got an investigation report that be it the RSS or BJP, their training camps are promoting Hindu terrorism.” Shinde’s later clarification that he meant saffron terrorism and not Hindu terrorism failed to satisfy the BJP and its ideological fountainhead RSS (Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh).

BJP has already announced that it would disrupt parliament or boycott Shinde whenever he speaks and wants discussions on various burning issues including the VVIP helicopter scandal.

Prime Minister Manmohan Singh appeared resigned to another stormy session of parliament and frequent logjams after the all-party meeting. “This session of parliament is going to transact important financial business and it is our sincere hope that we will have a productive, constructive debate leading to agreed solutions to the many national problems that our country faces… I have said this before and I’ll repeat it again… parliament is the forum for discussions or dialogue and all parties have an obligation to ensure that parliament runs smoothly,” prime minister Singh said.
