Rahul Gandhi takes over Congress as the new President
The 47 year old Rahul Gandhi has officially taken over the Indian National Congress Party as the President. Unopposed by any of his party members he has taken the baton to lead the party.
On Saturday, December 16. 2017 he received the formal certification to lead the Congress Party as the President of the same, at the AICC Headquarters in Delhi.
The formalisation of him being the President of the Party was taken just two days prior to the formal counting of votes of the Legislative Assembly Elections in Gujarat and Himachal Pradesh.
On the occasion of being elected the Congress President, unopposed, he was accompanied with the Former Prime Minister of India Dr. Manmohan Singh, his mother Smt. Indira Gandhi, current Chief Minister of the Congress Party and MPs of the Party, and other PCC Chiefs and other delegates.
Rahul Gandhi has been a prominent figure in the Congress Party since 2013, as he was the Congress Vice President. As soon as he was elected to be the Party President, he was congratulated and applauded by every member and well-wisher of the Party present.
In his speech, right after he was elected to the post of the President of the Congress Party, he said that his Party will focus on Women Empowerment and will ensure that women’s role are seen prominently at all fundamental levels in the Party. He aims to put pressure on the Union Government regarding the Women’s Reservation Bill. His main challenge would be to revamp the organisation of the Party in a way to address the Lok Sabha election of 2019.
Meanwhile, Sonia Gandhi hinted at her retirement soon from the official roles in the Congress Party. Though she did not mean she would retire from politics altogether. Sonia Gandhi has been steering the wheels of the 132 year old Party since she was 19 in 1998.
