Sunil Mantri(SM): Lot is being heard about Jio. Could you tell what exactly it is?
Vinayak Patil(VP): Reliance Jio or simply Jio is a 4G Mobile Telephony and Digital service provider in India. The official name is Reliance Jio Infocomm Limited- RJIL.
Jio plans to bring in a digital revolution in India. Jio will provide not just superb quality voice and broadband service but infact create an ecosystem on which various digital services can be made available and affordable to the masses.
Jio will focus on providing affordable True 4G smartphones, high bandwidth Broadband Networks at quite low prices, Rich Content and a wide range of Applications, Secured Digital Commerce, Media, payment services, Cloud services, Mobile Money, Digital Health care, Digital Education, Digital Entertainment, Wi-Fi enabled parks and many others.
Some of the interesting applications would be Live TV, Video on Demand, Digital Magazines, On line Chat, Online Gaming and many others…

SM: Why name Jio?

SM: How different it is as compared to existing network?
VP: Jio offers around 100 Mbps of downlink data rate. As per the live test conducted by Telecom analyst the speed observed was around 75 Mbps. None of the other operators can provide such a high data rates.
Also the 4G voice and data plans offered will provide around 75GB data and around 1500 min voice at a very affordable prices. The prices of the plans are as low as 200 Rs for 75GB data.
The speed and coverage is incomparable. A wide range of 4G Handsets are being made available at very affordable prices.
SM: Will it be launched state wise or across India?
VP: Yes Jio is planning to launch services across India. Jio has laid more than 2.5 lakh kilometers of fiber-optic cables, covering 18,000 cities and over one lakh villages, with the aim of covering 100% of the nation’s population by 2018. It has an initial end-to-end capacity to serve in excess of 100 million wirelesses broadband and 20 million Fiber-to-Home customers
SM: When is the launch date?
VP: Jio will launch its 4G broadband services throughout India in the first quarter of 2016-2017 financial year.
SM: Has reliance involved any external players/company for this project… technology sharing
VP: Jio believes in collaboration and working together. We have teams working from different companies and different parts of world all towards a common Goal. Digital Revolution. SM: What are the expectation from Jio?
VP: Reliance thoroughly believes in India’s potential to lead the world with its capabilities in innovation. Towards that end, Reliance envisages creation of a digital revolution in India.
Reliance Jio is creating the most extensive and future-proof network in India, and perhaps, in the world. It will provide next generation legacy-free digital services over an end-to-end all-IP network, which can be seamlessly upgraded even to 5G and beyond.
SM: What is the expected budget invested and from how long it’s being worked out?
VP: Jio has invested around 2,00,000 Crore for Digital India and may plan to invest more as and when required.
SM: What handset to use for availing Jio services.
VP: Jio has its own brand of Handset called the LYF. They are good looking with a high technical configuration and at comparatively affordable price range.
Jio has recommended a list of around 20 handset models across vendors that support its VoLTE/4G service.
